Democratic Party of New Mexico Executive Committee Calls for Bi-Lateral Ceasefire
Following a unanimous vote on January 18th, the Democratic Party of New Mexico Executive Committee released the following statement calling for a bi-lateral ceasefire in the conflict in the Israel and Palestine region:
“The Democratic Party of New Mexico (DPNM) comprises a broad coalition of voices. As a party, we celebrate diversity and hold common ground in believing that all human life is precious, independent of faith and ethnicity. We assert our dedication to lasting peace and the cessation of armed conflict everywhere. We also continue to denounce racism, anti-semitism, and hate speech in the region and here at home. The DPNM Executive Committee stands with our rank-and-file membership from communities across our state to call for a lasting negotiated ceasefire working towards a two-state solution in Gaza, Israel, and the broader region.
“We join the global community in expressing our profound grief at the loss of over 1,200 Israelis, Americans and other foreign citizens in Hamas’ horrific attacks on October 7, 2023, including egregious sexual violence against women. Hamas is a terrorist organization and should be dismantled. Beyond the attack on October 7, Hamas has grossly oppressed Palestinian civilians including suppression of women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people of different faiths. The Israeli Government has a right to protect its citizens and ensure their safety from terrorists and by delivering a proportional response.
“The ongoing bombardment of Gaza has had devastating effects on Palestinian civilians. Nearly two million have been displaced, and tens of thousands of lives have been lost; there is also an urgent need for humanitarian aid. In summation, the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party of New Mexico strongly believes the war between the Israeli government and Hamas must stop.
“The United States holds immense diplomatic power, and therefore, we call on the United States government to:
Call for a negotiated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that includes a release of all hostages;
Deliver large-scale humanitarian aid to the area and negotiate with Egypt, Jordan, and regional powers to deliver aid;
Encourage Israeli and Palestinian citizens to change their current leadership, electing fresh governmental leaders who will work for a true, lasting peace;
Ensure that military aid conforms to U.S. law and does not target civilian populations; and
Continue to support the Biden Administration’s diplomatic efforts at negotiating peace.”
The DPNM Executive Committee is composed of DPNM Statewide Officers, Congressional District Vice Chairs, County Chairs, DNC Committee Members, New Mexico Federation of Democratic Women President, and Young Democrats of New Mexico President.
