40 Days and Counting, Still No Word from No-Answer Nella
Despite Continuing to Dodge Questions, Nella’s Record Shows a Stance on Abortion That’s as Radical as it Gets
40 days into her campaign for U.S. Senate, No-Answer Nella still has yet to explain to New Mexicans where she stands on the most important issues facing our state and country. But actions speak louder than words (and certainly more than silence), and her actions show an extreme, far-right stance on reproductive health care that would decimate these rights in New Mexico.
In 2022, Nella donated the maximum amount allowed under federal law to Yvette Herrell’s congressional and David McCormick’s U.S. Senate campaigns. Both candidates are strong supporters of the notion that “life begins at conception.” Herrell even championed the Life at Conception Act, which aimed to ban all abortions, with no exceptions, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and even certain types of contraceptives. Nella’s max-out donation to Herrell’s campaign came just months after the Dobbs Decision, overturning the protections of Roe v. Wade. It’s clear that Nella and Herrell are wholly in line with the recent decision of the Alabama Supreme Court to deny families in-vitro fertilization rights.
Just last week, Nella spoke at an event hosted by Kurstin Johnson, a GOP candidate for the New Mexico State Senate in Albuquerque. During an unsuccessful campaign for the New Mexico House of Representatives in 2022, Johnson’s campaign largely focused on supporting a 15-week abortion ban.
Considering Nella has thus far dodged questions about abortion rights, her choice to have one of her earliest campaign events hosted by an anti-choice radical shows that she would be a disaster for reproductive rights if she ever held office.
“Although No-Answer Nella continues to avoid saying where she stands on the issues by refusing to do any interviews, her actions are evidence of an anti-abortion stance that is as far-right and fundamentalist as it gets,” said Daniel Garcia, Democratic Party of New Mexico Spokesperson. “No matter how long she dodges questions, there is no hiding from the fact that her political activity points to support of the most far-right extremes of anti-choice policies, like criminalizing all abortion and banning IVF. As someone who grew up here, she should know that New Mexico is proud to be a safe haven for the right to choose and reproductive health care.”
By going out of her way to associate with and support anti-abortion zealots like Herrell and Johnson, there’s no question that Nella would follow Mitch McConnell’s lead and be a guaranteed opponent of women’s rights in the U.S. Senate.
