NM Democrats Celebrate Pride Month
LGBTQIA+ Party Officers Reflect on Progress
This June, The Democratic Party of New Mexico is celebrating Pride Month by reaffirming long-standing support for the LGBTQIA+ community and reflecting on historic accomplishments and individuals in the fight for equality in New Mexico.
DNC LGBTQ Caucus Member & DPNM Vice Chair Manny Crespin in recognition of Pride Month:
“New Mexico Democrats remain committed to the fundamental rights of our LGBTQIA+ family, friends, and neighbors. We continue to champion the right to equal treatment under the law for every LGBTQIA+ person and celebrate acceptance and diversity. We are proud that our Party’s most prominent leaders have all been relentless advocates and reliable partners in the battle for LGBTQIA+ equality and continue to build on our progress.”
DPNM Secretary Isaac Dakota Casados in recognition of Pride Month:
“Before it was legalized nationally, New Mexico Democrats led the fight for marriage equality in 2013, overturning our state’s same-sex marriage ban. We continue to build on that progress today. As Democrats, we remain committed to fighting for marginalized communities the same way we have fought and continue to fight for the LGBTQIA+ community.”
For the June edition of DPNM’s monthly video newsletter, the Blue Opiñon, DPNM heard from trailblazers for LGBTQIA+ rights in New Mexico: NM Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, who led the way to the legalization of marriage in Bernalillo County in 2013 as County Clerk; NM Senator Liz Stefanics, who was the first openly gay state legislator in New Mexico history, and along with her partner, the first gay couple to be legally married in Santa Fe County; and DPNM Vice Chair Manny Crespin and Secretary Isaac Dakota Casados, both openly gay men.
National and New Mexican Republicans continue to undermine marriage equality and oppose fundamental LGBTQIA+ rights. The New Mexico GOP’s website openly details their discriminatory position that "defines marriage between one man and one woman".

In contrast, New Mexico Democrats proudly include LGBTQIA+ rights, including marriage equality in our official platform. During the 2023 Legislative Session, our Democratic Governor and legislators were able to turn the Reproductive and Gender Affirming Care Act into law, ensuring New Mexico is a safe place for critical gender affirming care.
