DPNM Chair Velasquez Reacts to Mike Johnson’s Election as US House Speaker

Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Jessica Velasquez released the following statement on the election of Mike Johnson as US House Speaker:

“After weeks of chaos, the Republican House majority caved to the MAGA extremists in their party and chose Mike Johnson, an inexperienced individual who worked hand-in-hand with Trump to undermine our democracy and overturn a free and fair election, has a track record of undermining access to safe and legal abortion care, and opposes same-sex marriage equality.

“Under an extremist like Mike Johnson, House Republicans will try to thwart any meaningful legislation and progress, making it all the more critical that Democrats take back the House and restore its purpose to serve the American people. This means New Mexicans must reelect all three of our Democratic Congressional Representatives and in particular, must defeat Yvette Herrell in the Second District, who would eagerly put Mike Johnson’s anti-choice MAGA party line ahead of working New Mexicans.”
