Unfit for Office and Unfit to Lead New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE – As New Mexico voters prepare to watch tomorrow’s debate between Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Stephanie Garcia Richard and Republican candidate David Gallegos, we felt it was important to remind voters who Gallegos is and what his ideas would mean for New Mexicans.

A look at his legislative record and past statements reveals a pattern of extreme positions, harmful votes, and bizarre public statements. From attempting to hand over New Mexico counties to Texas to comparing abortion to the Holocaust, Gallegos has consistently chosen far-right ideology over the needs of New Mexico’s working families. Now, to be honest, there are more than ten moments (we just couldn’t choose), so we grouped them by topic. 

"David Gallegos is unfit for office and unfit to lead, having spent his career pushing extreme ideas that would strip away New Mexicans' rights, gut public services, and undermine our economy," said Mila Myles, spokeswoman for the New Mexico Democratic Party. "Whether he is attacking universal childcare, demonizing women’s healthcare, or suggesting we carve up our own state for Texas, Gallegos continuously shows how out of touch and dangerous his agenda really is to the people of New Mexico. Because when you’re David Gallegos, being crazy isn’t a decision; it’s a ‘lifestyle.’”

As voters tune in to the upcoming Lieutenant Governor debate on Thursday, streaming live on the Albuquerque Journal’s website, here are ten of the craziest Gallegos moments and positions that New Mexicans should know about:

1. ABORTION:

   1. Compared abortion care to the Holocaust. 

   2. Called New Mexico the "abortion capital of the world.”

   3. Said abortion helps human traffickers because trafficking victims have to be “cleared out” to go back and work for the trafficker. 

2. NEWMEXIT: Sponsored a Senate memorial to explore "NewMexit"— a plan to give up southeastern New Mexico to Texas, giving away one of our state's critical revenue sources. And it’s a plan he talks about…a lot.
   

3. AFFORDABILITY: Co-sponsored legislation to remove wage requirements for contractors on public projects that protected workers’ pay and benefits. 
   

4. CHILDCARE: Voted against the Child Care Assistance Program Act that created universal childcare.

5. EDUCATION: Voted against free college tuition for New Mexico students. 

6. HOUSING: Opposed over $125 million in funding for affordable and workforce housing development.

7. OIL & GAS: Co-sponsored legislation to gut New Mexico’s renewable energy standards.

8. PUBLIC SAFETY: Co-sponsored legislation to reinstate the death penalty. 

9. TRUMP: When asked whether he supports Trump, Gallegos said he likes him and that New Mexico needs to pay attention to him if it wants to keep federal funding.
   

10. LGBTQ+ RIGHTS: While serving in the House of Representatives, Gallegos opposed a ban on conversion therapy for minors, saying, “Why should the state take away their right to get help?”
