Two Years After Dobbs Decision, New Mexico Democrats Reaffirm Commitment to Abortion Rights

Today, on the two-year anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, overturning nearly 50 years of legal protections established in Roe v. Wade and destroying the federally protected right to access safe and legal abortions for Americans in many states, the Democratic Party of New Mexico released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court’s decision two years ago today stole the right to decide when and how they may choose to grow a family from countless Americans. Recent polling shows that a record amount of Americans are pro-choice. Two-thirds of US adults oppose the overturning of Roe and roughly the same amount think abortion should be legal. It’s clear - Americans support the right to safe and legal abortion and oppose the Dobbs decision.

“While abortion access remains protected in New Mexico, in other states, women and doctors are exposed to punishment, imprisonment, public interference, and violence for seeking reproductive health care. One in three women in the US now lives under an abortion ban because of Trump across 21 states.

“Criminal Donald Trump appointed 3 of the Justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade and vocally takes credit for the decision on the campaign trail. No matter how Trump tries to dodge his position on banning abortion, his closest allies make it abundantly clear that they want to ban abortion nationwide as part of the far-right Project 2025 plan for another radical term. Trump even said he is willing to let states prosecute individuals who receive an abortion and is looking at policies to restrict contraceptives.

“Here in New Mexico - Democrats are ready to do our part to ensure Biden stays in the White House. Any New Mexican who wants to keep their rights to bodily autonomy protected and wants to see those rights enshrined at the national level must vote for Democrats up and down the ballot in this year’s election.”
