DPNM Celebrates 100 Years of Native American Citizenship Under the Snyder Act

June 2nd marked 100 years of the Indian Citizenship Act, also known as the Snyder Act, which granted full citizenship to all Native Americans in the United States.

Democratic Party of New Mexico Secretary Isaac Dakota Casados released the following statement:

“The Democratic Party of New Mexico is proud to recognize 100 years of the Indian Citizenship Act, also known as the Snyder Act. Centuries of injustice can never be undone, but this Act was an important early step on the road we are still on toward equity and inclusiveness of Native Americans within our democracy.

“However, it still took decades before every state recognized Native Americans’ right to vote. This speaks to why it is important that Native American voices are continually uplifted and recognized. In the Democratic Party, we are committed to making sure that Native Americans are well-represented at every level of government and the political process. We will continue to safeguard tribal self-determination and sovereignty, and create opportunities for our Native Sovereign Nation partners to have a seat at the table.”
