Republicans Determined to Enrich Billionaires

Big Beautiful Bill” Bad for New Mexicans

Recently, the US Senate Parliamentarian determined that certain GOP plans to gut Medicaid have no place in the federal budget bill. Undeterred in their plans to further enrich the rich, Republicans are cooking up schemes to circumvent the non-partisan Parliamentarian or even calling for her to be fired. At this point, it’s abundantly clear that spineless Republicans remain determined to push through Trump’s signature billionaires-first “Big Beautiful Bill” regardless of how much it hurts the working class or even how many lives it costs.

It is no exaggeration to say that the “Big Beautiful Bill” would be deadly here in New Mexico. Fifteen rural hospitals have been identified as being at high risk of closure because of the bill’s cuts to the Medicaid funding they rely on. Rural New Mexicans deserve to have their most basic healthcare needs met and cannot be expected to travel hours even for the most basic care. Additionally, these rural hospitals are among the largest employers in these communities.

On top of forcing hospitals to close, the “Big Beautiful Bill’s” further cuts to Medicaid and SNAP food assistance would be particularly harmful to New Mexicans. Around 880,000 New Mexicans are enrolled in Medicaid, 41% of our state’s population with 34% of enrollees being children and 37% living in a rural area. New Mexico has roughly 451,200 SNAP recipients, 21% of the state population, significantly higher than the national average.

“No matter if it comes at the expense of the hospitals and patients who depend on Medicaid, or even New Mexico’s parents who rely on SNAP to put food on the table, Republicans have proven that they’ll stop at nothing to enrich the wealthiest,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico Spokesperson Daniel Garcia. “Regardless of what the Senate Parliamentarian says or how many lives their “Big Beautiful Bill” would cost, the sad reality is that Republicans are hellbent on helping billionaires become even richer.”

Recently, Sandia National Laboratory announced it will be cutting jobs and both Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories announced their renewable energy and efficiency programs will be eliminated entirely by the “Big Beautiful Bill.”

“There are certain realities even Republicans need to face about climate change and the future of the global energy economy. Entirely eliminating the funding for renewable energy and efficiency programs from our national labs hurts New Mexico and will put our country at a significant disadvantage,” said Garcia

The bill's harm to working families would be exacerbated by soaring consumer and grocery prices caused by Trump’s trade wars and tariffs. The American public overwhelmingly disapproves of Trump’s bill–even registered Republicans oppose it, all the while their party’s Senators and Representatives are yet again too cowardly to diverge from Trump.

The bill also eliminates a tax on gun silencers, halts clean energy credits while increasing oil drilling on public lands, funds mass deportation operations, and defunds Planned Parenthood. Representatives Teresa Leger Fernandez (NM-03), Melanie Stansbury (NM-01), and Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) all voted against Trump’s disastrous bill when it was up for its initial vote in the House. It currently awaits a vote in the Senate.
