89,000 New Mexicans Projected to Lose Medicaid Coverage January 1

Trump rule changes backed by Gregg Hull will devastate families and cost New Mexico lives

ALBUQUERQUE - Starting this week, more than 230,000 New Mexico Medicaid recipients will receive letters from the New Mexico Health Care Authority, alerting them to new federal work requirements, beginning January 1, 2027, enacted as part of President Trump’s hostile overhaul of America’s healthcare system, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

With these new requirements, the state Health Care Authority projects 89,000 vulnerable New Mexicans will lose Medicaid coverage. Additionally, starting in October 2026, more than 2,300 refugees, asylees, trafficking victims, and humanitarian parolees will lose their Medicaid coverage — immigrants who came to New Mexico looking for a better life but instead are getting their healthcare ripped away by the federal government. 

Gregg Hull, the Republican candidate for Governor of New Mexico, has made it clear that he supports Trump’s unfair new rules, stating throughout his campaign that he is open to “scaling back” resources for our most vulnerable New Mexicans. 

“Gregg Hull wants to take healthcare away from families, all to appease Trump and his MAGA donors,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico spokeswoman Mila Myles. “We can’t trust him with our healthcare and we can’t trust him to fight back against Trump's worst impulses. With tens of thousands of New Mexicans expected to lose their health coverage in the coming months, Hull is the wrong choice to lead our state at this critical time.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic nominee for Governor of New Mexico, Deb Haaland, has been crystal clear about her priorities: lowering healthcare costs, expanding access to care, and pushing back against the Trump administration’s unfair and arbitrary rule changes. “Donald Trump’s policies are making New Mexicans get sicker and lose access to healthcare,” said Haaland. “The state is the first line of defense against the Administration’s dangerous policies.” Read Deb’s full healthcare plan here.
