Going to Hull in a Handbasket: Gregg Hull Doubles Down on Destroying New Mexico’s Essential Services

Wants to eliminate $2.2B annually in state revenue with no long-term replacement

ALBUQUERQUE - This week, the Republican candidate for Governor of New Mexico, Gregg Hull, continued to push a scheme that would cost New Mexicans roughly $2.2 billion a year in lost revenue for essential services in critical infrastructure like our schools, our healthcare, our higher education institutions, and our public safety heroes by eliminating the Personal Income Tax.  

Hull’s obsession puts more money in the pockets of the highest earners, while leaving those with the lowest incomes with little to no savings – a move inspired by his best friend Trump and his billionaire friends. 

Hull seems to think this money would flow right back into our communities. Our question for him is: which communities will be left without funding for public safety, education, and healthcare?

His fixation on a half-baked plan would force the state to use a limited pool of money to fund essential services, rather than launching new programs that make generational investments directly in our communities. That’s like putting a band-aid on a bullet hole.

“Gregg Hull so badly wants to be like Donald Trump that he’s obsessed with cutting taxes for the rich, destroying services people rely on, and leaving working families to pick up the pieces,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico spokeswoman Mila Myles. “Eliminating the personal income tax would wipe away more than $2 billion in revenue that our communities rely on for schools, public safety, healthcare, and higher education. We already have a Donald Trump in D.C. – we don’t need one in Santa Fe, too.”

Hull’s proposal to eliminate the personal income tax is short-sighted and would leave our state vulnerable in the years ahead. This regressive scheme would also cut New Mexico’s ability to provide direct relief to families who need it most. Eliminating $2.2B, or nearly 16% of our state’s budget, would likely put pressure to raise other taxes, such as the Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) and property taxes, shifting more of the tax burden onto working-class New Mexicans.

While Democrats continue to promote real targeted tax relief for working families, Republicans only have talking points. It’s clear that Gregg Hull and New Mexico Republicans will prioritize Donald Trump’s MAGA agenda, instead of implementing policies that benefit New Mexico families.
