House Republicans Ram Through Voter Suppression Bill

GOP’s Racist SAVE Act Would Create Barriers for Citizens

Today, the U.S. House Republicans passed the SAVE Act, another GOP attempt to place barriers to voting on eligible immigrants, Native Americans, and other voters of color.

This bill would require intentionally restrictive voter i.d. requirements to register to vote. Citizens would be required to present a birth certificate or passport in person to register to vote instead of more easily accessible driver’s licenses, tribal IDs, and Real IDs. This barrier would effectively eliminate the use of the National Voter Registration Act’s mail-in voter registration form and New Mexico’s same-day and online registration, as it would require these documents to be produced in person.

“Republicans should be ashamed that they continue to use verifiably false and racist claims of voter fraud to disenfranchise targeted communities - especially in New Mexico - of eligible voters and intimidate them from participating in our democracy,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico Spokesperson Daniel Garcia. “But this is no surprise - Republicans have been utilizing scare tactics and racially charged language in their attempts to place undue barriers on the right to vote for years, and the SAVE Act is just the latest example right out of the GOP’s voter suppression playbook.”

Democrats believe that secure and accessible elections are a fundamental pillar of our Democracy and that every eligible voter should be able to practice their right to vote without barriers.
