President Biden Recaps Accomplishments and Vision for America

DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez Reacts to the State of the Union Address

Tonight, President Joe Biden recapped some of the landmark accomplishments from his first term as President and outlined goals of the Biden-Harris Administration going forward. From rebuilding infrastructure to protecting fundamental abortion rights, the Biden-Harris administration has delivered landmark achievements that have directly benefited New Mexican families.

Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Jessica Velasquez released the following response to tonight’s State of the Union address on behalf of the Democratic Party of New Mexico:

“President Biden proved once again that he is the leader that New Mexicans need and deserve. The contrast between President Biden’s vision for the future of our country and Trump’s is crystal clear. While President Biden is focused on improving the lives of New Mexican families and defending our hard-won freedoms, Donald Trump’s top priority is ripping away our rights and threatening the very foundations of our democracy.

Nowhere is that contrast more vivid than on reproductive rights. Republicans across the country have shown that they will follow Trump to any extreme, including a national abortion ban. New Mexico’s Republican candidates are willing to do the same. Thankfully, New Mexico’s Democratic Senators and Representatives in Washington support restoring the protections of Roe v. Wade, while Republican candidates oppose restoring Roe or refuse to tell New Mexicans where they stand.

Trump has pledged to ban abortion nationwide and repeal the Inflation Reduction Act. As Trump doubles down on his pledge to be a ‘dictator on day one’ and make the wealthy richer off the backs of working families, President Biden remains committed to defending our democracy, building our economy from the bottom up and the middle out, and making sure the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share.

New Mexicans understand the stakes in this election and know that the only way to keep building on all the progress we’ve made is reelecting President Biden and Vice President Harris to a second term in November. An army of democratic volunteers across New Mexico are already on the ground and will be alongside our President every step of the way.”

Just some of the major accomplishments of Joe Biden’s presidency up to this point include:

Historic job-creating legislation, like The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, American Rescue Plan, & Chips Act, that will help create lasting, high-quality jobs for the working middle class.
The Inflation Reduction Act, which is the once in a generation infrastructure and pro-family law that lowers prescription drug, health care, and energy costs for American families. It’s also the most aggressive legislation tackling the climate crisis in American history.
$5.2 Billion in public infrastructure and clean energy investments in New Mexico under the Biden Administration including $2.1B announced for transportation investments in roads, bridges, public transit, ports and airports, as well as electric school and transit buses, EV charging, and more.
$1.6B in funding from the Biden Administration to provide affordable, reliable high-speed internet to everyone in New Mexico.
Approximately $2.1 billion has been announced for transportation in New Mexico to invest in roads, bridges, public transit, ports, and airports from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
A historic surge in job growth by creating more than 15 million jobs since Biden took office with 90 thousand jobs created in New Mexico alone.
The total amount of clean water funding announced from the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is $22 billion, including roughly $1 billion for New Mexico.
Bringing student debt relief to millions of Americans.
Implementing a $2,000 yearly cap on out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, saving over 439 thousand New Mexican seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries money on prescriptions.
Capping insulin costs at $35 per month for seniors on Medicare.
Common sense gun safety reform like banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Restoring the status and reputation of the United States on the international stage after Donald Trump did everything in his power to weaken it.
