PRESS RELEASE

REPORT: Martin Zamora’s Voting Record Shows He’s Too Extreme for New Mexico

From voting against universal childcare to opposing a woman’s choice even in the case of rape, Zamora’s record reveals just how out of step he is with New Mexico families.

A review of Martin Zamora’s legislative record reveals a troubling pattern of extreme votes against New Mexico families, reproductive freedom, and access to essential services.

While New Mexicans want their elected officials to lower costs, protect their freedoms, and strengthen their communities, Zamora has repeatedly voted against policies that would help New Mexicans afford essential care.

“Martin Zamora’s voting record tells New Mexicans everything they need to know: He’s too extreme for our state,” said Daniel Garcia, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “He voted against universal childcare. He opposed repealing a law that criminalized abortion, and voted against helping New Mexicans access essential healthcare services like medical aid and child welfare. These aren't the priorities of New Mexico families. They're the priorities of an extreme politician who is out of touch with the people he wants to represent.”

Zamora Voted Twice Against Repealing New Mexico's Criminal Abortion Ban

Zamora — who is running to replace the Chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus in the U.S. House — twice voted against repealing a 1969 law that criminalized abortion, threatening doctors with felony penalties.

In 2019 and again in 2021, Zamora voted against legislation to remove the outdated abortion ban from New Mexico law. Had the ban remained on the books when Roe v. Wade was overturned, New Mexico could have faced the return of criminal abortion restrictions.

When our state needs more doctors, not less, Zamora’s vote would have led to doctors fleeing our state, like they have in Idaho after that State banned abortion.

His extreme position appears to extend even to cases of rape. When asked whether he opposed abortion for women who became pregnant as a result of rape, Zamora refused to give a direct answer, saying only, “I’m against the rape.”

Zamora had two opportunities to stand up for reproductive freedom. Both times, he voted to keep a criminal abortion ban on the books.

Zamora Voted Against No-Cost Childcare for New Mexico Families

At a time when families are struggling with rising prices, Zamora voted against legislation establishing New Mexico's Child Care Assistance Program for no-cost childcare.

His vote against SB 241 in 2026 put him on the wrong side of one of the most important affordability issues facing working parents. Universal childcare is extremely popular because it helps working families, and especially working mothers, stay in the work force.

New Mexico families need relief from rising costs. Zamora voted against giving it to them.

Zamora Failed to Show Up as Federal Cuts Threatened New Mexico

As the Trump administration slashed federal funding for New Mexico, including projects supporting public lands and affordable energy, Zamora failed to attend a meeting involving a vote on studying the impact of federal cuts on the state.

New Mexicans deserve leaders who show up when federal decisions threaten their communities, jobs, and investments.

Zamora Voted Against Helping New Mexicans Access Essential Services

In one of the most diverse states in the country, Zamora voted against legislation expanding language access to state programs and services.

In 2022, Zamora voted against HB 22, which sought to improve access to government resources for New Mexicans with limited English proficiency.

The services include critical programs that help families access healthcare, child welfare resources, and other assistance.

Zamora Voted Against Affordable Housing and Medicaid

Zamora voted against the New Homes for New Mexico Program in 2026. In 2024, he was one of just seven representatives to vote against legislation establishing various affordable housing projects.

His record also includes a vote against Health Care Affordability Fund distributions intended to help protect Medicaid funding amid federal cuts. In addition, he missed the vote to ensure a temporary extension to protect New Mexicans from the federal Medicaid cuts.

“New Mexicans deserve someone who will fight to lower their costs, protect their freedoms, and show up for their communities,” said Daniel Garcia, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Martin Zamora's record shows he won't. He's simply too extreme for New Mexico.”
