Health, Education, and Social Security
Promote healthy communities by
• instituting comprehensive, single-payer, universal health care coverage, including alternative and preventative health care (2006) such as the Health Security Act (2009)
• protecting families from methamphetamine, black tar heroin, and other dangerous drugs (2008)
• fully funding Medicaid and Medicare programs (2006)
• limiting the use of mercury-containing vaccines and amalgam dental fillings (2008)
*strengthening the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and defined-benefit pension plans (2008)
*legislating that all domestic and imported food and other products, whether man made or natural, contain origin of country labeling for the products and disclosure regarding the presence of any substance that has been determined to be harmful to consumers such as pesticides, fertilizers, lead and mercury (2009)
Strengthening public education by
• increasing spending on public education until our teachers have pay equivalent to or better than the national average and that our students have graduation rates equivalent to or better than the national average (2006)
• maintaining our free education system by eliminating any consideration of voucher plans (2006)
• supporting programs and funding for creating a permanent place for mental health professionals within the public school systems in New Mexico (2006)
• supporting mandatory proficiency in a second language as a requirement for graduation from any state accredited high school in New Mexico (2006)
• enforcing mandatory state standards for the study of civics, citizenship, the political process, and how these affect us (2009)
*replacing No Child Left Behind with a program that promotes high scholastic performance (2006)
Strengthening public education by
*ensuring that Social Security will not be reduced, privatized, or otherwise diminished and will be maintained properly to provide a secure base on which future generations can build a dignified retirement (2006)
*raising the income limit for payroll deductions specified in the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) to ensure the future solvency of the Social Security System (2006)
