Dear State Central Committee Members:

The Democratic Party of New Mexico will hold our spring State Central Committee Meeting on Friday, March 17th from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Smith Brasher Hall on the TVI campus, 717 University Blvd SE in Albuquerque.  Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.  Smith Brasher Hall is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of University Blvd. and Coal Ave.

The primary purpose of this meeting will be to conduct regular business and to vote on amendments to our party rules.  This meeting will not serve as an opportunity to hear resolutions, as the State Platform and Resolutions Committee will have met on March 4 to craft a platform for consideration by the full Convention on Saturday, March 18.

As you may recall, you received a phone call or email from my staff gauging your opinion on holding the State Central Committee meeting and the Pre-Primary Convention on the same weekend. That question was overwhelmingly approved.  I strongly urge you to attend this meeting in person, but proxy voting is allowed.  There is no limit to the number of proxies that may be held by any one registered Democrat.  We must reach a quorum to conduct business.

State Rule 4-5.            Proxy.  Except as otherwise provided, proxy voting is permitted.  A proxy shall be in writing, signed by the person giving the proxy and filed with the State Party Secretary. A proxy shall be valid only when voted by a registered Democrat of the same county as the person giving the proxy.

Please consider the fact that many State Central Committee members and delegates are traveling great distances from outlying areas.  They will be taking time off on Friday and staying overnight.  Towards this end, I believe members of the State Central Committee who live in close proximity to Albuquerque have a special responsibility to ensure necessary representation.

Again, conventional proxy voting is allowed for State Central Committee meetings (not for the Pre-Primary Convention).  Thus, any registered Democrat from your county, including delegates to the Pre-Primary Convention, are eligible to carry your proxy.  A proxy form is enclosed for your convenience.

There ought to be ample activities for everyone staying overnight.  In particular, the Young Democrats (YD) of New Mexico will be hosting their “Unity” fundraising party on Friday night at the Hilton Hotel.  The suggested contribution is $10.  The Hilton is located at 1901 University Blvd.  I hope you’ll consider supporting the YDs, as they are working to form chapters throughout the state to engage and mobilize the next generation of Democrats to carry on our values and traditions.

Also enclosed are a list of moderately priced hotels and a map showing the location of Smith Brasher Hall.  We will be sending additional information relating to the Pre-Primary soon, as we are still in the process of gathering lists of delegates from each of county.

If you are interested in making additional plans while you are in Albuquerque, consider visiting the Albuquerque Convention Bureau’s website, http://www.itsatrip.org/abqinfo/request/ , to request the Official Albuquerque Visitors Guide & Vacation Planner.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact my staff at the Democratic Party of New Mexico at 505-830-3650.  Information will continue to be available on our website, http://www.nmdemocrats.org/.

Sincerely,

John V. Wertheim

Chairman

Democratic Party of New Mexico
